As a longtime reader and avid fan of DBH's writings, I sincerely wanted to give this book, essentially an extended meditation on philosophy of mind wrapped in a charming tale, the highest rating. I've long read Dr. Hart's penchant for neologisms, obscure vocabulary, cryptic references, and extended passages in multiple untranslated languages with the bemused charity of a hopeless admirer. However, at the apex of the story, as Roland discloses that the central philosophy that is the key to understanding the core of all true religion is...something in Sanskrit. Literally Sanskrit. Untranslated, untransliterated (word? phrase? aphorism?) Sanskrit without even the decency of context in the following conversation to illuminate its meaning. I nearly threw the book across the room. He may as well have said that the meaning of life, the universe, and everything is 42. I've known for years that Hart is more than a little enamored of his own considerable intellect, and he has said in his own words that he doesn't have a pastoral bone in his body, but not until now have I come to suspect that he views us benighted peasants outside the rarefied confines of the ivory tower with actual, unabashed contempt. I don't know if I can summon the fortitude to complete the last few chapters.
